By Michelle Harrison, Modesto, California
As I sit here back in Modesto, California, sipping my morning coffee, it’s hard to believe that just a few weeks ago, I was thousands of miles away, immersed in the vibrant cultures of India and Nepal. Traveling has always been a passion of mine, but as a 53-year-old mother of three, it’s not always easy to find the time—or the courage—to embark on such a grand adventure. But when I came across the “Spirit of India and Nepal” tour offered by Travel Empowers, I knew this was the journey I had been waiting for.
The Decision to Travel
I’ve always been drawn to the idea of seeing the world, but with a busy household and three kids, life often got in the way. When I turned 53 earlier this year, I decided it was time to do something just for me—a journey that would feed my soul and ignite my sense of adventure. India and Nepal had always been on my bucket list, and the idea of combining them into one tour was too enticing to pass up.
After a bit of research, I stumbled upon Travel Empowers, a company that emphasized sustainable, impactful travel. The idea of traveling in a way that would not only enrich my life but also benefit the communities I visited resonated deeply with me. So, with a little nudge from my supportive family, I applied for the tour, and before I knew it, I was packing my bags for a 13-day adventure across two incredible countries.
Delhi: A Vibrant Welcome to India
The adventure began in Delhi, where I was greeted by the warm smiles of my fellow travelers and our incredible tour guide, Priya. From the moment we met, it was clear that Priya was not just a guide—she was a storyteller, a cultural ambassador, and a friend. Her passion for her country was infectious, and she made sure we didn’t just see the sights but truly understood the stories behind them.
Delhi was a whirlwind of colors, sounds, and smells. I marveled at the blend of ancient and modern, from the bustling markets to the serene courtyards of old temples. One of my favorite moments was our visit to the largest mosque in India, where Priya shared stories of its history and significance. It was moments like these that made the trip so special—experiencing a place through the eyes of someone who truly loves it.
Agra: A Dream Fulfilled at the Taj Mahal
No trip to India would be complete without visiting the Taj Mahal, and seeing it at sunrise was a dream come true. The sight of this magnificent monument bathed in the soft morning light is something I’ll never forget. But as awe-inspiring as the Taj Mahal was, it wasn’t the highlight of Agra for me. That honor goes to the elephant conservation project we visited later that day.
Elephants have always been my favorite animals—there’s something so majestic and gentle about them. Visiting the sanctuary in Agra, where rescued elephants are cared for and rehabilitated, was one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. We learned about the incredible work being done to protect these animals from exploitation and how our visit was contributing to their care.
Getting up close to these gentle giants, hearing their stories, and knowing that we were supporting their well-being was deeply moving. I even had the chance to help feed one of the elephants, an experience that brought me to tears. It was in that moment that I truly understood the impact of responsible travel—how it can bring joy and support to those who need it most, whether human or animal.
Jaipur: The Pink City and Cultural Immersion
Our next stop was Jaipur, the famous Pink City. Jaipur was a feast for the senses, with its stunning palaces, vibrant bazaars, and the warm hospitality of its people. One morning, we participated in a yoga session overlooking the city—a peaceful start to what would be a day filled with exploration and discovery.
One of the highlights of Jaipur was our rickshaw ride through the bustling streets, where we got a firsthand look at daily life in the city. We visited the City Palace, where Priya shared fascinating stories about the royal family and the rich history of the region. That evening, we were invited to a local family’s home for dinner, where we enjoyed traditional Rajasthani cuisine and learned about their way of life. It was moments like these that made me feel truly connected to the culture and people of India.
Kathmandu and Chitwan: Nepal’s Natural Beauty and Warm Hospitality
After an unforgettable week in India, we flew to Kathmandu, the gateway to the Himalayas. The contrast between the two countries was striking—while India dazzled with its vibrant energy, Nepal welcomed us with its serene landscapes and spiritual ambiance.
In Kathmandu, we explored ancient temples and sacred sites, including Patan Square, where the intricate architecture took my breath away. We also had the chance to participate in a traditional momo-making class, which was not only fun but also a great way to learn about Nepalese cuisine.
The most thrilling part of our Nepal adventure was our time in Chitwan National Park. We stayed at a charming lodge on the edge of the park, where we were treated to traditional dances by the local community. The next day, we embarked on a jungle safari, where we spotted rhinos, deer, and countless species of birds. The highlight, of course, was the chance to see elephants in their natural habitat, a fitting continuation of the conservation theme that had touched me so deeply in Agra.
Reflections: A Journey That Changed Me
Returning home to Modesto, I find myself changed in ways I hadn’t expected. This journey was more than just a vacation—it was a reminder of the beauty of our world and the importance of protecting it. The experiences I had, the people I met, and the lessons I learned will stay with me forever.
The work being done by Travel Empowers is truly inspiring. Their commitment to ethical travel, cultural preservation, and community support is something I’m proud to have been a part of. It’s not just about seeing the world—it’s about making a difference.
Since returning home, I’ve been sharing my stories with friends and family, encouraging them to consider a journey with Travel Empowers. I’ve even started looking into ways I can continue to support elephant conservation from home, a cause that has become very close to my heart.
To anyone considering this adventure, I say go for it. You’ll return home with more than just photos—you’ll carry with you the stories, the connections, and the knowledge that you’ve been part of something truly special.
Thank you, Travel Empowers, for the journey of a lifetime.
