What’s in My Day Bag? Sarah M’s Top Items to Always Have When You’re Off Adventuring
Hi, I’m Sarah M., an avid traveler, and the Travel Empowers Travel Hero Coordinator (I am the one that makes sure you get on the right tour, on the right date) and I’ve learned a thing or two about packing the perfect day bag for my adventures. Whether I’m hiking the mountains of Bhutan, wandering the streets of Jaipur, or exploring remote villages in Bali, Costa Rica or Fuji, there are certain essentials I always carry with me. Having the right gear in your day bag can be the difference between a smooth, enjoyable day and a stressful one.
Here are my top items to always have in your day bag when you’re off adventuring!
1. Reusable Water Bottle
Staying hydrated is key to any adventure, especially when you’re on the move. I never leave without my reusable water bottle, and I recommend one that’s durable and insulated to keep your drinks cool (or warm!) for hours. I love using a bottle with a built-in filter, so I can refill it safely from almost any water source, even when I’m out in nature.
2. Sunscreen and Lip Balm
Trust me, you don’t want to forget these! No matter where you are, whether in the mountains or by the coast, the sun can take a toll on your skin. I always carry a small tube of sunscreen that fits easily into my day bag and reapply it throughout the day. Lip balm with SPF is also essential to protect your lips from getting dry and sunburned, especially on hikes.
3. A Light Jacket or Scarf
Weather can change in an instant, especially when you’re traveling to places like Nepal or Bhutan where temperatures can drop as the day goes on. I always pack a lightweight jacket or a scarf, which doubles as a cover-up for visiting temples and monasteries. It’s also a cozy extra layer for unexpected chilly evenings.
4. Power Bank
There’s nothing worse than running out of battery when you’re trying to capture that perfect sunset or need to check your route. I always keep a power bank in my bag to charge my phone and other devices on the go. With a fully charged power bank, you won’t have to worry about missing out on those important moments.
5. Snacks
A day of adventuring can build up quite an appetite, especially if you’re exploring remote areas where food isn’t always readily available. I like to carry a few energy bars, nuts, or dried fruit in my bag—easy to pack and great for giving you a boost when you need it.
6. Mini First Aid Kit
Accidents happen, and I’ve found that having a small first aid kit can be a lifesaver. Mine includes essentials like band-aids, pain relievers, antiseptic wipes, and blister pads—especially helpful after long days of walking. This kit has come in handy more than once when my travel companions needed a quick fix.
7. Local Currency and ID
Even in today’s digital age, cash is still king in many parts of the world, especially when visiting markets, small shops, or rural areas. I always carry some local currency for snacks, souvenirs, or tips, along with a copy of my ID for any situations that require identification. Keep it in a secure part of your bag, like an inner zippered pocket.
8. Camera or Phone with a Good Camera
Whether you’re capturing the vibrant colors of India’s markets or the serene beauty of Bhutan’s mountains, having a camera at the ready is a must. I often rely on my phone’s camera, but if you’re a photography enthusiast, a lightweight point-and-shoot or mirrorless camera might be your go-to. Don’t forget extra memory cards!
9. Hand Sanitizer and Tissues
Traveling can be messy, and you never know when you might need a quick clean-up. I always carry a small bottle of hand sanitizer and a pack of tissues in my day bag. They’re especially useful when visiting rural areas or using public restrooms.
10. Notebook and Pen
I’m a bit old-fashioned in that I love to jot down my thoughts, observations, and sketches as I travel. Carrying a small notebook and pen allows me to document my adventures, capture travel tips, or just reflect on the day. Plus, it’s a great way to pass the time during downtime.
